The full address of the property, in Long Thurlow, will be provided nearer the date.   It is a private home.

Overview:

This will be our six visit to this house.

This is a really valuable opportunity to learn about surveying a Suffolk historic timber-frame, client communication and risk management of a substantial project.   The house is Grade II Listed and we will also discuss the process for getting Listed Building Consent for the project.

This house was first seen pre-purchase and has been revisited as it goes through an ambitious project for a large extension and a whole-house refurbishment.  When completed, this house could well be one of the largest retrofit projects in the UK.  A team of talented experts have designed a project that will utilise in-built monitoring with the aim of reducing condensation and moisture risks.

The house has been dendro dated to 1628.

For this next visit, the removal of the 1940’s side extension is likely to be complete and the gable wall exposed for timber-frame repairs.  Progress of the work is entirely dependent on the contractor and cannot be gauranteed.

Topics covered:

In this Surveyor Training Day, we will:

  • discuss the benefits of using science and monitoring data to inform decisions
  • consider what is the difference between a ‘poor’ survey report and a ‘competent’ survey report
  • learn about the difficulties of designing an ambitious retrofit project
  • learn about decision making and providing good advice to a client
  • discuss when a further investigation is needed
  • discuss damp in older buildings and what this means to a buyer
  • consider how a house evolves in time
  • learn about the importance of a talented project team

Format:

We will be walking around the house.   You’ll need to consider your own mobility and suitability for this location.  There are some slopes and steps, but it is mostly a level surface outside.

Designed for:

The training is intended for, but not exclusive to, those who are involved in the pre-purchase survey of residential property and have an interest in traditional house construction.  It should also be of interest to those interested in retrofit.  If you are still training for your professional qualifications you’ll be very welcome and you’ll learn lots before you are exposed to surveys for paying clients.

Additional information:

Car parking.   There is plenty of parking available at the property.

Lunch and drinks.   We will start the day with a tea/coffee.  Refreshments and biscuits are provided during the day.    Lunch is not included but you can make your own arrangements by bringing a packed lunch if you wish to.
